"Music, uniquely among the arts, is both completely abstract and profoundly emotional. It has no power to represent anything particular or external, but it has a unique power to express inner states or feelings. Music can pierce hearts directly; it needs no mediation."

- Oliver Sacks, Musicophilia

Free Hugs!! Sep. 14th, 2007 @ 11:57 pm
This video really made me smile:

It was rated as the best inspirational video on YouTube.

I really really would like to do this one day. Wander into a busy shopping centre or public place, holding a sign like this, offering free hugs :D

For more info, see http://www.freehugscampaign.org/

Sometimes, a hug is all that we need.

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.'

Computer programming is tremendous fun. Like music, it is a skill that derives from an unknown blend of innate talent and constant practice. Like drawing, it can be shaped to a variety of ends – commercial, artistic, and pure entertainment. Programmers have a well-deserved reputation for working long hours but are rarely credited with being driven by creative fevers. Programmers talk about software development on weekends, vacations, and over meals not because they lack imagination, but because their imagination reveals worlds that others cannot see.

So... Things are back to full swing here in Grahamstown. We're halfway through term and things seem to be going well. Having only three subjects is SO much better. So this year i'm taking: CompSci 2, Information Systems 2 and Maths 102. Evil commerce subjects no more!!

I've got quite a few extra things I'm also involved with this year. I'm a student networking technical representative (which means for 2 hours a week I sit fixing students networking problems), I'm tutoring Computer Science 1L, I'm treasurer for the NekoAnime society and I'm the student networking representative for my res (Goldfields).

It was great to see all my friends again at the start of term and I had an awesome birthday! (Thanks for all the presents guys!).

Hmm... I really should post more often...
Hope everyone has a great week!

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...

I stole this off Zoe's journal…

Greetings all!

Long time no blog! I'm sure u didnt miss much. My blogs are generally quite bland. Nothing really interesting seems to happen here.
I've been stuck without my laptop for the past 2 weeks and looks like it will be another 2 before I get it back... At least it means I'm getting my work done instead of procrastinating :D

Have a good long weekend everyone!

Hey all...

Sorry for the delay.

What a busy term so far. The work is seems almost neverending. And people told me that the third term is chilled... If I didn't have awesome supportive friends, I don't know how I would've coped.

At least in two weeks I'll be at home. A break from everything. A much needed break.

There's not really much to tell right now. Maybe I'll think of something later.

Hi all... (If there's actually anyone reading this :P)

Life is hectic at the moment...

My day started off by going to breakfast at 7:30 and then my day of lectures commenced at 8:30. 5 lectures, one after the other...
Then had to rush back up the hill - literally ran - took me about 4 mins.
Gulped down lunch in about 5 mins, got into my suit in about 1 min, had res photograph, ran back down 2 dungeon, changed my clothes, ran down to physics department - and made it there just in time for my 3 hour electronics prac...

Enough with my ramblings...

I absolutely loved the weather we had towards the end of last week. I love the rain - even when i get soaked by it :)

On Sunday evening I went to a special NekoAnime showing - Grave of the Fireflies, in commemoration of the 61st anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
Wow.
I have never experienced a movie like that before.

Public holiday tomorrow! w00t!
Enjoy it!!

Cheers,

mm1za :)

It's great to be back!

The flight and bus trip back here was non-eventfull...
Tallulah, Graham and Zoe greeted me at the bus, which was nice :)

I am officially a BSc student now (w00t! BCom no more!) so am happy.
Already drowning under all the work that is due, but somehow I'll manage...
» Exams and such...
So the dreaded results came out today. I'm pleased with them :D I know I worked hard.

In other news...

I went to visit Aston_Splat in eShowe earlier this week. Was nice seeing a fellow Rhodent. I'm looking forward to getting back to Rhodes. See you all there!

» First post from home....
So.... Been at home for over a week now, and honestly, nothing exciting has happened. I've been pretty bored at home. I did see some friends over the week which was nice. I'm working next week so will have something to keep me occupied :)

Have a good vac everyone!!
